Google+ to shut down after security bug

International Regulators Begin Investigation into Google’s Data Breach

Google is shutting down its long-neglected Facebook competitor Google+ following the disclosure of a vulnerability that could have resulted in third-party developers accessing private data from around 500,000 users, the company announced Monday.

The company is also stressing its commitment to security - now offering "more fine-grained control" of what account data Google users share with third-party apps. Well, this is a major security flaw that brought users personal data to risk.

It does not include any other data users may have posted or connected to Google+ or any other service, like Google+ posts, messages, Google account data, phone numbers or G Suite content.

Google's failed attempt at a social media platform, Google+, will soon be coming to an end. The bug gave apps access to information on a person's Google+ profile that can be marked as private.

The Wall Street Journal reporter Douglas MacMillan discusses how Google CEO Sundar Pichai denied the allegations that the company silences conservative voices and how regulations would impact the tech giant.

According to the paper, the memo said that while Google could not find evidence that the exposed data had been misused, it also could not prove that misuse did not happen. "Our goal is to support a wide range of useful apps, while ensuring that everyone is confident that their data is secure".

Trump apologizes to Kavanaugh, says he was 'proven innocent'
Other analysts said the court's reputation could suffer as it becomes perceived as a political, rather than a legal, institution. However, the Republican cautioned that "it remains to be seen whether this lasts for the next three weeks or not".

We made Google+ with privacy in mind and therefore keep this API's log data for only two weeks. Google said that 90 percent of all Google+ sessions don't last more than five seconds, confirming rumors that the site was more of a ghost town, when compared to Twitter and Facebook. "It's that Google's execs knowingly avoided disclosing an issue because they knew it'd invite gov scrutiny & bad PR".

But it's not doing so exclusively out of concern for users' privacy: Smith admitted the network is not a success, saying "The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds".

The profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected.

Many people probably aren't aware if they even have a Google+ account - here's how to check.

Google says that going forward, rather than bundling permissions together for a single approval, each and every permission requested by an app will be shown one at a time, within its own dialog box.
